prepped and ready for the production and the finalizing of gathering ideas in order to produce a strong artifact piece to reflect my work for EPQ at the end.
This tab is to help keep me organised and to separate my main EPQ research from my Artifact studies in order to gain an idea into where I have placed my research in order to gain quick access towards for future reference.
01/12/2016-Independent Study Session
As I have now entered the 12th month, I believe it time to begin formulating plans upon potential routes and pathways that I can explore in order to direct my final piece. Allowing myself time in order to prepare a full prepped final piece that shows my studies within the surveillance area.
After 2 months of following my subject percipient, Mr Darby around during school times, I think its beneficial for myself to use the already gathered photos for potential mocks and drafts of what the expected final piece is to take the form of exactly.
Giving myself time on deadlines and targets, I would like to spend a week on planning, two weeks on prepping and arranging photos of the already gathered collection of photos I have on Darby. Than perhaps throughout the Christmas Break, mock up little studies and sketches of what the final piece is expected to look like in order to ensure everything is perfect and in order to finally begin creating the finalized version of the finished piece.
I plan to begin the final piece on the 1st January 2017 (but still continue to take photos of my percipient, Mr Darby, in order to gather a wide range) and spend at least 1 hour or more a day on it, until it is complete and I am satisfied with it.
I know that I need to stay away from anything involving art and design as I don't want to fall back into these subjects for my EPQ as I don't want this to be the downfall of my project if I become too involved with this area of focus, I believe that with the photos gathered I should put this to use and actually go down a photography based piece and create something from this. I have arranged a meeting with the photography teacher in order to discuss how I can use my gathered photos and produce this into one big artifact that can be shown for my final piece.
01/12/2016 -Initial Idea Sketches:
Playing around with a few ideas I have, I began to sketch some quick basic 5 minute sketches of my percipient and how I can present him as a whole for the final of my EPQ summary.
I like the idea of one big model portrait, however how can I can about this so I wont lead too far into art where I could risk damaging the entirety of my EPQ course.
For now these drawings are the basics of ideas however I shall soon lead into initial ideas where I can focuses on a specific area where I can than focus upon what it is I exactly want to do.

After the discussion with the photography teacher as well as independent research towards routes I can explore, I was than able to expand off ideas and begin formulating paths to go down to produce my artifact. I liked the idea of the mosaic and how I can use all my pictures and turn this into one big collage of him.

My Reply:
Firstly, I intend to educate myself on how to create an effect like this, as it certainly looks challenging, however I am sure with practise and hours of drafting, mock ups and initial planning, that it shall all go well and I should be ready to start the final piece in January that I intend to spend at least an hour a day on or the preparation of my presentation in which this artefact shall be revealed to my audience.

Artefact Research-Today, I have spent a majority of my time on watching tutorials, website sources and clips on how to reproduce a similar effect for my desired outcome for my EPQ artefact.
With this research I have made towards photo mosaics, I think its time to draft out my first attempt at my own one to see if I could make this style independently for my own project.
I know that I would heavily rely on Photoshop to aid me throughout the production of this task, so I have ordered a trail run of the software site at home, allowing me to have instant access to the site at school, and at home which will be handy especially as it will be the Christmas holidays soon and I am hoping to get a majority of my artefact complete in order to better prep for my presentation.
12/12/2016-EPQ Artefact-First Draft
For a first time, I think it was a good attempt as I have never used Photoshop before-it was a tricky to use at first and I found it quite fiddly to handle. There were times where I wanted to seek alternative options but thankfully it worked well to give me this final outcome.
Looking at this, I know that I need more practise on this technique as it has not gone exactly to what I wanted. Mr Darby's face looks too orange, as well as the background squares are too large which dominates over the main photo so its hard to make out my percipients face.
What I need to achieve and work on?
* Make the background squares much smaller- my first attempt was difficult to see the face of y percipient compared to the ones I have seen from Google Images, so I need to decrease the sizes of my squares completely.
* Alter the sizes/measurements as I think this is where I went wrong in the first place as much of the layouts needs re altering size wise.
* Maybe create multiple photo mosaics of Darby, as I only made the one collage so perhaps making multiple mosaics and combining them as one will allow the college to be a lot more smaller and actually make out my main image.
In Conclusion, this first draft has allowed me to understand many things regarding the artefact, my main issue being that for my size desire, I need a lot of Darby photos-I am looking at over 900 photos to fill the entire nine grids, so I need to ensure that I hit this target, yet my issue is that I only have less than 2 and half months , so this piece of art work shall be intense but will be spread out across this time and hopefully, I will meet this target.
Goals set for the next planned step: Seek advice from supervisor and what he thinks the artefact looks like to him, but ultimately seek advice from photography teacher to allow myself to recognise the fatal errors I may of went down in regards towards sizing and photo colour and transparency.
SIZES FOR PHOTOSHOP CC
To gain that A4 size, I have found that the width and length is,
21 -
29.5 1
So I shall be using these sizes to help in the creation of my final piece.
Second Attempt at Final Artefact Piece
Upon rectifying the errors and issues I have faced whilst preparing myself for the artefact, I am now pleased to say I have over come each obstacle I challenged myself with and now ready to start the creation of my final piece. Below, is a screenshot of the second attempt, I decided to fragment the main profile picture of my subject by nine squares in order to work upon each one individually and than place together on one big canvas to show off the creation and final outcome of my piece for the EPQ project.
I am now confident in pursuing onwards with the remaining 8 squares left, however upon reviewing this second attempt, I have realised that:
*I shall be needing a lot of photos of my subject, Mr Darby-by calculating that I used 100 photos for this square piece, it informs me that I shall be needing at least 900 photos to cover the nine squares but also more (probably 100-200 photos extra) to cater to the sides as well, as the canvas is a little bigger than expected.
So, I have now set myself a target and goal for the expectations of the completion of this piece and that is:
*Take as many photos of my subject from 23rd January-17th March 2017 (hopefully by the end of this date, I shall have enough photos for the satisfying completion of my artefact.) I aim to not replicate the photos on my SDs Cards but it will be used as a last resort if I feel I don't have enough as I desire the entire canvas to be filled.
* I aim to have this final piece finished by no later than the 20th March 2017, that way, I can get my supervisor to check this and ensure it links towards my project well and will link in towards my presentation overall.
*Additionally, I am hoping to make a short film on Primere Pro to show off my Darby photos, so when I come to reveal my artefact, I shall have this short piece of footage displaying my subjects photos exhibiting in the background on the screen as well. I really want to make my artefact big and create an effect on my viewers so I think this would be a good idea in producing a short film to accompany my artefact.
Construction of the final piece
Now, in the January month, I need to start the production of my final piece. With the problems and issues I have faced now overcome, I am now confident in starting my final piece for the outcome of this project.
19/01/2017
On this day, I spilt the main Darby sims photo up into 9 A4 size squares. This way I can copy and save each segment onto photo shop and start my photo montage. I calculated that I need over 900 photos to make my final piece. I aim not to copy any Darby photos I have and aim to get as many as I can throughout the February month.
I aim to work on each individual fragment in order to complete the entire portrait of my subjects face. I cant wait for the completion of my artefact as I think it will be a really strong finish and certainly shows off the extensive amount of time, energy and effort I went towards this subject. I certainly am enjoying the project so far, and cannot wait to get back out there to start gaining more photos of my subject, but for now I shall work through all my SDs cards and use the ones I have taken throughout the 4 months so far. I believe that if I work on the final piece but also go back out there and take fresh new photos, it shall aid me well and continue to strengthen my motivation for this subject as I keep creating myself goals to work towards. Square One:
Upon drafting up the
CANVAS V CARD
Weighting up both options, I believe that
THIS TAB IS IN AID OF MY EPQ ARTIFACT AND THE PREP I WENT THROUGH IN ORDER TO SUCCESSFULLY CONSTRUCT MY ARTIFACT-THIS AND THE SKETCHBOOK IS WHERE YOU SHALL FIND MY VISUAL AIDS FOR THE INITIAL PLANNING, PRODUCTION AND CREATION OF THIS.
