07/09/2016-Study Session, Mr Darby

Today in the hall, the EPQ students all met up for the first time. Mr Darby, our EPQ manager, introduced us to the Extended Qualification Course, importantly telling us about the course in full detail and what we would need to do to drive our own projects into successes.

Mr. Darby spoke to us about the previous class successes and what kind of topics they looked into to give us an idea of the amount of diverse topics to look towards and to be adventurous of where we can possibly go with ours, giving us the ambition to be as adventurous and daring as we desire to be. Mr Darby also informed us the importance of work expectancy, deadlines as well as telling us about supervisors and their involvement within our course. These things are all pretty important things to consider for the course to which it shall drive our projects towards future success.

We were also shown through paper format of the production log and what we shall soon be filling out via digital format throughout the course. The production log is a vital document that shall be filled out by the supervisor, manager and percipient of the course to document the progress of the candidate until Easter next year.

At the end, we were given a sheet that was important to fill out outlining our first drafting ideas to guide us towards an appropriate supervisor to be assigned towards. This is important as it briefly introduces our thoughts and initial ideas regarding our topics and what we desire to study.

Personally, I felt that it was a very informative morning, I never knew we had personal supervisors that assist us as a guide throughout our projects so I cannot wait to receive word of mine to begin this project. However the biggest challenge for me would be to pick a topic that I would be happy enough to pursue, as it stands my initial ideas are:

* Surveillance- Do we know we are being watched? Can begin looking towards inspirational show Person of Interest and how they approached their ideas regarding surveillance that they exhibit on the show.

* Theatrical Makeup- How special FX has developed over the years within the TV industry and how has this affected consumers of television and makeup artists themselves?

* History- Look at regional areas within the county and how has society impacted changes throughout increased populations and events.

All these initial topics I shall need to independently research in my own time within the next few days and ultimately decide which would be best for myself to study independently throughout the next 9 months.

Yet there is something that I am confident in-and that would be to create an artifact concluding the end of this project altogether, I feel like I can incorporate my creative skills into designing a piece of art that demonstrates my project title. I believe that this will be more effective for me than a 5000 word essay as I feel like I am a lot stronger in designing than writing.

Initial Ideas

This sheet was informing Mr.Darby of our starting thoughts of where our projects can possibly go. It was also a good starting point for us as we considered ideas into where we may begin to start studying. This sheet shall explore our ideas and steer us towards a best suited supervisor for us.

09/09/2016-Independent Study

I decided to take into more consideration of my chosen initial ideas for EPQ. I want to ensure that I spend time upon this to ensure that I am picking out the right topic course to pursue to gurantee me success throughout the course.

After spending the day researching, I believe that I would like to steer towards Surveillance- I think this topic is very scintillating, something that can guide me into many paths for research in regards towards primary and secondary research in order to produce a 2000 word essay as well as an artefact to present my overall outcome on this topic.

I believe my main inspiration for this topic came from the American TV show Person of Interest, a political, thriller, crime show that features artificial surveillance incorporated into the lives of ordinary people. The intelligence known as the machine, surveys the lives of these people, siphoning information from them and predicting whether or not they will be involved within a violent crime or not in which the characters would have to prevent in time.

The trailer below depicts my inspiration for the EPQ course, after watching the trailer-many questions began to form in my mind, mostly being the dominant one of do we know we're being watched?

I rather liked the idea of surveillance consisting from this, begging the question of how much are we really being watched? I really find this intriguing as it is, and can be, something that has been incorporated into our lives already-but to what extent?

The idea of surveillance is also

15/10/2016 Study Session-Mr Darby

In this session, Mr Darby told us about the past students work within the school years to help with our own projects. It helped us to realize that we should be adventurous and daring regarding choosing a specific topic. No idea can be too silly nor boring. The past work helped us to identify with projects and what we can possibly do.

Yet we also had to take into consideration that the topic should expand over the 9 months so it must be diverse enough to research and continue over this vast amount of time that shall perk our interests and guarantee the success of the overall outcome.

Again, I'm still confident in circling back to the topic of surveillance, it has not been on my other class members ideas and is rather an abstract yet prominent issue that we are facing.

No word has gotten back to us regarding our supervisors.

21/10/2016-Study Session, Mr Darby

In today's EPQ lesson, Mr Darby taught us about the schedule plan from now until April 2017. Suggesting about monthly plans, particularly work titles we could think about completing within this time. Taking into consideration of primary and secondary research, our presentations at the end and our essays, whether that being the 2000 word or 5000 word document.

As it currently stands, I am aspiring to complete my research by the start of January-that gives me a couple of months to focus upon the artifact, 2000 word essay, evaluation and presentation to sum up the course. By that time, the EPQ would of concluded and I can focus upon revising for my additional subjects.

Additionally, Mr Darby also spoke to us about the previous students undergoing this course, he managed to gather past comments and advice in their opinions and how they viewed EPQ. Some of the following advice was rather useful to us as it informed us of the importance of maintaining our course. Some of the advice Mr Darby informed us of includes:

* Start the bibliography- preferably electronic format in alphabetical order.
* Keep on top of the diary.
* Always keep on track of deadlines, it was easy to fall behind.
* Start working now, the more research the better your study field is.
* Begin thinking ahead of planned tasks to complete.
* Stay motivated.

Still no word on our supervisors.

29/10/2016 Study Session, Mr Darby

I was informed of the name of my EPQ supervisor, Mr Jamie Bishop who's role at Manshead School is teaching History. As an Art Student, I was clearly unaware of who he is, so the introduction was vital to establish one another to begin the project if we were to begin closely relying upon one another for my EPQ course.

We were told to arrange a meeting with them to acquaint ourselves so I felt it important to get the introductions done to begin this project off to a successful start so spent the afternoon arranging a meeting with my own and the introduction of my surveillance project to gain guidance and advice regarding the topic so I feel more confident in pursuing on wards.

Emails sent from myself to my supervisor, Mr Bishop to introduce one another and the EPQ topic.

After the introductions via emails was completed, I than proceeded up to A4 in which Mr Bishop and I had a formal introduction face to face. We than decided to meet after school due to us staying behind most nights as well as our timetables not matching throughout the day so we deemed it as more convenient to meet after school hours to talk about EPQ.

After the introduction, we than planned to meet a week Friday to give me time to expand upon my initial idea and allowing myself to think up potential ideas into what I can possibly do for my artifact in regards towards surveillance.

30/09/2016

Having received word of my supervisor and planned meetings, I than decided to focus more on EPQ starting the October month and how I can possibly start this project in regards towards an potential artifact and where my research can take me.

I have worked out a planed timeline for myself to work through for the duration of my EPQ course.
